Your God is too small.
                              --J.B. Phillips

God is big enough to rule the universe
Yet small enough to live within my heart.
                                                      --Christian Hymn

“On the one hand…on the other” is how we approach a subject that is complex enough to resist a simple explanation.

On the one hand God is distant…separate and apart from our world. It’s a way we speak of the respectable distance between the Creator and the creation. God is ‘wholly other than’ the human race. This wholly-otherness is the basis for the reverence we attribute to God. God is big.

But on the other hand God is near…a relational God who desires to interact with us. Jesus is the bridge between God and our global family.  As Christians, we believe God came near to us in Jesus of Nazareth, who gave us the clearest picture of the nature and mission of God. If you want to know God, get to know Jesus. Jesus reduces God to our level of understanding. Which is another way of saying God is approachable.

The gospel of Jesus is God’s instruction book for living life to its fullest. Jesus said, “Just as God sent me into the world, so do I send you” (John 20:21). Just as God lived His life through Jesus, He will also live His life through us when we commit to God’s call to be the visible presence of God in our little corner of the world. God’s love for us and God’s vision for the world cannot be defined in words like big and small. God cannot be confined to a Thesaurus. God is. And that’s a statement of faith.
