Want a New You

Then an extreme makeover is what you need.

So says the TV program host of the popular show of the same name. You've seen it, haven't you? Participants are separated from their family and friends for the period of time needed for the "new you" to emerge. The makeover is more than cosmetic. Dental surgery, plastic surgery, weight loss, whatever is needed. Although very entertaining, Extreme Makeover is fairytale stuff masquerading as reality TV. The ugly duckling morphs into the beautiful swan and then gracefully preens before an admiring cast of family and friends...and then lives happily ever after.

The End ?

Do you ever wonder how long the makeover lasts? Now that would make for real reality TV!
How do they look... a year later?
How do they feel about themselves...a year later?

No one likes themselves all the time. We fantasize being taller, slimmer, more intelligent, more talented, more marketable for a more exciting job. What's missing is a clear sense of purpose in life. Reality TV tends to showcase people gutsy enough to stretch themselves to the limit... emotionally, intellectually and physically. Some participants have actually launched a satisfying and lucrative career, but success does not come with Lifetime guarantees. There must be some organizing principle that provides stability in the up times as well as the down.
